Our Mission…. Families Through Adoption fosters the formation of families through the adoption process. FTA partners with adoptive families throughout the adoption journey; from the conception of the adoption plan through the children’s independence. This partnership extends to all members of the adoption triad as well as other venues dedicated to supporting children and parents.

WHAT’S THE DREAM AT FAMILIES THROUGH ADOPTION? Families Through Adoption began in 2006 with the vision of an empty child’s rocking chair. We strive to always remember that families experience the emptiness of an empty chair just as children around the world experience the loneliness of an absent family. Our mission is to unite families with children.

Dedicated to…

  1. Quality Services
  2. Long term Vision & Development
  3. Partnerships
  4. Fair & competitive rates
  5. Competent staff

  • Our social work supervisor is Mary Moore. Mary holds a bachelors degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and her masters’ degree in psychology from Western Illinois University. Most of her professional career has been spent in Community Mental Health agencies serving those severely disabled by mental illness or developmental disabilities. She currently works as the compliance manager for Ottawa CMH. Mary adopted her only child, Elli, age 13, from China in 1995 as a single mother. Since that time she has been very involved exploring the Chinese culture and Mandarin language. Mary was instrumental in the Lakeshore Chinese Culture Group and both she and Elli are currently active in Zeeland’s Ren-Ai Chinese Language Center. She and Elli returned to Elli’s hometown (Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, PRC) in 2004 and dream of returning to southern China some winter. Prior to working with Families Through Adoption, Mary was employed by Adoption Advocates. Mary’s professional goal is to offer support and counseling to older children who have been adopted internationally. Mary and Elli reside in Holland and can be contacted at (616) 481-7061 or mary@FamiliesThroughAdoption.org.

  • Things to do While you Wait

    THE PAPERWORK’S DONE AND THE WAITING’S BEGUN…

    1. Purchase or design your adoption announcements and pre-address the envelopes.
    2. Clean your closet, drawers, and basement. You won’t have time once you get home!
    3. Research your child’s birth country. Find out its history, holidays, traditions, language, & food.
    4. Make a keepsake for your child. Ideas include a quilt, sampler, or a piece of furniture. You may even try painting a picture or journaling. Anything you create will become a treasure!
    5. Research fun places to visit or things to do with your child in your local community and around the state.

  • Tips for a Smooth Transition when returning home. From veteran moms and dads:

THE FAMILY’S LARGER BY ONE NOW WHAT’S TO BE DONE….

    1. Have a special friend re-stock your refrigerator with milk, bread, eggs, fruit, vegetables, and your favorite beverages before you get home.
    2. Make 2 or 3 meals and freeze them before traveling.
    3. Plan an open house after being home a few weeks. Keep it simple and invite everyone to meet the newest member of your family.
    4. Sleep when your child sleeps.
    5. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Let your family and friends run errands, clean, and do the yard work while you adjust to life with an additional family member!
